Kyler's Surgery

After talking to the orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Souder that left Childress, he recommended a doctor out of Amarillo that could do the surgery Kyler needed.  We wanted to go to Arkansas and have Kyler be his first patient, but it would have taken months before he would have been able to preform surgery there.  If Kyler had any chance of playing basketball this year, we needed to get the surgery done asap.  Thankfully, with some call from Dr. Souder, we were able to get on Dr. Cooper's schedule very quickly was get the process going.  Dr. Cooper agreed that he would need the MPFL procedure to fix his knee and prevent this from happening again.  Basically that take part of his hamstring and use it to anchor his kneecap from being able to move as easily.

September 3rd was the big day, and thankfully we had been saving up for remodeling our house because we had the cash on hand to pay for the surgery in full or we would not have been able to get it done as quickly.  Kenney was able to get off work and be there with us which was really nice.

The surgery went really well and was successful as far as we can tell. Kyler had a very hard time waking up from anesthesia.  He couldn't get fully awake and got nauseous.  Finally, after about 2 hours of being in recovery, we kind of forced him to get up.  Kenney took him to the bathroom where he peed and then puked which really helped him to wake up and feel better.  We got him to the car and then he immediately went back to sleep.

We got him setup on the couch with the ice machine and then we just brought him food as he couldn't really move much.  Surprisingly the next day he went to school for half the day.  He continued to do that the rest of the week by staying in the office all morning.

I am still shocked and amazed at how well he had handled everything.  He has been through a LOT and yes, he's been down and disappointed, but he has faced each new challenge and pushed through.  Now to recovery!!

Getting the dreaded IV

Getting his leg shaved
Not quite awake

Trying so hard to wake up, but it's just not working.

His new friend for the next few weeks.

So glad Kenney was there to help!
And very glad we brought the van so he could stretch out on the way home.

Seeing the incisions for the first time 3 days later and finally being able to take a shower!!

He was like this for about 1.5 hours until we really messed with him to get him up and going.
