Egypt Day 2: Aswan, Felucca, Nubian Village

The day after seeing the pyramids we had to be down in the lobby at 3:30am to leave and go to the airport and fly to Aswan.  We were not quite expecting the itinerary they held us to!  So many early mornings!  It was hard to get adjusted to the time change.  The airport experience was different than usual.  We went through security so many times!  We thought we would be flying away from the smog and pollution, but it was all along the Nile also.  We envisioned the Nile River being so much bigger.  It still wasn't small, but I figured it would be so much bigger.  We boarded the river cruise boat that afternoon after seeing several different things such as the river dam, an apothecary shop, a spice shop, and the unfinished obelisk.  We finished the day with a felucca boat ride and a trip to a Nubian Village.

She blew stem in all of our faces, but it did smell good.
The unfinished obelisk.
That thing is pretty big, not sure how they planned to move it once it was carved!
Every place we went gave us hibiscus tea.  It never tasted the same either.  That's our friend Debbie in the background.  She was so sweet.  Kenney was her adopted son for the trip, haha!
Spices all over!
Took this for Kevin and Savanna. They collect funky masks that I probably would have paid attention to if we hadn't gone to their house.

Aswan was a little cleaner than Cario
Yeah that shower situation was interesting...
The hallway leading to our room.  Thankfully we were at the end and the furthest away from the bar and the engines!

I really wish this part of the day had lasted longer. We enjoyed the felucca boats more than the motor boats.

Kenney was much more brave than me, and actually swam in the Nile River that was freezing cold water, surprisingly. I didn't want to be wet for the ride back to the cruise boat. My biggest regret was not getting sand from the shore.

The motor boats were pretty loud.

There were a lot of young boys on surfboard type things going around to all the boats singing to everyone trying to get tips. They were so loud!!

Not the best video, but you can see the lush shoreline in this video.

Nubian Village

The Nubian village was a little south Aswan and on the west side of the Nile.  The people there live very simple lives much like their ancestors (but they did have phones, so I'm not sure how similar). We saw some crocodiles and ate some food.  We were hoping this experience would be like the one we had in Crete, but it was nothing like that.  The safari in Crete was much better, but we didn't regret going.  It was an experience we won't forget and made us much more aware of the Nubian people.  They are considered more African than the Egyptians and even helped them win a war because of their language abilities.  As we were leaving and getting on the boat, several young girls came up to us trying to sell us things.  They were so aggressive and even pinching me on the arms trying to get us to buy things.  They were draping things on Kenney.  It was so uncomfortable.

The food we didn't quite get a description of.  We believe the cheese was goat cheese, but tasted nothing like the goat cheese we've have before.  The dark sauce was some molasses based sauce we think.  The bread tasted fine, but none of the rest was very good.

Kenney liked all of the things they made with the plants around them.

Our cruise boat at night.

I was the first one in line to hold the crocodile! That was pretty cool!
