Egypt Day 4: Edfu Temple, Karnak Temple, & Luxor Temple

Day 4 we saw 3 different temples. We stared before dawn at the Edfu temple and then cruised up the Nile a little way to Luxor to see the Karnak and Luxor temples.  It was a pretty hot day and a lot of walking, but each temple was very different.

Edfu Temple

The day started off super early.  Michael wanted us in line for the Edfu temple first because the lines were so long.  You could tell his experience was immense because he knew exactly when to have us ready to go and get things done so efficiently.  We had to wait for a bit for the doors to open, but it was worth it by the time we turned around and saw all the people behind us.  It was crazy town once the doors did open.  The crowd was pushy.  It was also cool to see it in the dark and then the sun rose while we were there.  The magnitude of the structure was amazing to witness just how big these temple and statues really are standing next to them. The Edfu temple is the second largest temple in Egypt and the most well preserved because it was buried in sand until the 1860s. The temple is dedicated to the falcon-headed god Horus.
The line of people wrapping around waiting for the doors to open.
Many of the tour guides used lasers to point things out to their groups.  You can see the green light on the left side of the temple.
The temple was bombed and had a lot of smoke damage.
World's first Wi-Fi signal, haha!
The inner sanctuary.
Kenney is standing in the middle in the magenta shirt; look how small he seems!!
Us with Horos, the god the temple was built for.
The Key of Life was all over everything!!
Bats inside the temple
These etchings have lasted such a long time! The precision of all the walls was facinating.

The crowds were absolutely INSANE trying to get into this temple! Maybe that's how God wishes all of his children would fight to get into his temple!

These walls were huge!! It was incredible how they could build such structures anciently!

Cruising Up the Nile

It was so odd to see such desert behind the lush banks of the Nile.
While wait for our turn
Karnak Temple
The rows of sphinx were so cool!

The Avenue of Sphinxes is a 'road' that extends from the Karnak Temple to the Luxor Temple.  It is over 1 mile long and has over 600 sphinxes.  It originally had 1,057.  It wasn't discovered until 1949 and was not fully excavated until 2021!  I thought it was really cool!
I had no idea how many pillars/columns would be in Egypt. I loved it!!  There was a lot of Roman influence in what remains of ancient Egypt.
